History through film

Here I will keep and ongoing list of films that have relevant to the GCSE syllabus:

Britain in World War I

The Somme (channel 4 film - hard to get now sorry)
A very long engagement (french film, a touch fruity)
Flyboys (Dodgy and not necessarily historically accurate but good special effects)
All Quiet on the Western front (classic, looks a little dated now)
Gallipoli (Mel Gibson invades Turkey!)
Atonement (Classy imagery of the British retreat at Dunkirk)
Deathwatch (Cheesy horror movie set in the trenches)

Nazi Germany

Downfall (German language film - last days of Hitler in his bunker)
Pianist (Harrowing escape of a Jewish musician from Nazism)
Boy in the striped Pyjamas (New film about concentration camps)
Schlinder's list (classic depiction of the holocaust)
Sound of music (yeah okay that one is a bit tenuous)

America in the 20s & 30s

Oh Brother where art thou (amazing comedy covering the whole of the syllabus!)
The Untouchables (Gangster thriller about bootlegging and crime)

I will try and find some films that show Treaty of Versailles, Weimar Germany, League of Nations etc...

Cheers, Sir
